Hawaiian musician Major Kealakai, renowned guitarist and conductor of the Royal Hawaiian Band, played a pivotal role in shaping music history.
In 1916, Martin crafted a custom guitar for him, exceeding the dimensions of a standard 000 model to amplify volume and resonate in concert halls. This bespoke instrument laid the groundwork for the iconic Dreadnought.
Today, Martin celebrates this milestone with the Custom K-1 Major Kealakai, a reimagined 12-fret guitar featuring vintage gloss sinker mahogany back and sides, an Adirondack spruce Vintage Tone System (VTS) top, hide glue construction, authentic 1931 X bracing, and a modern ebony pyramid belly bridge.
This blend of tradition and innovation pays homage to Martin's rich heritage, immortalizing Kealakai's legacy in musical craftsmanship.
